ON FRIDAY P brought home a box of fortune cookies he found at the supermarket in celebration of the Lunar New Year. Neither of us is entirely certain of all the traditions associated with this celebration, but according to the Chinese zodiac, this is his year. The Lunar New Year celebrates the beginning of the lunar calendar and typically falls between January 21 and February 20. Lunar New Year begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends 15 days later on the first full moon of that calendar. Every Lunar New Year has a special meaning based on an animal from the Chinese zodiac and an accompanying element (wood, fire, earth, water, metal). The zodiac consists of 12 animals: rat, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, ox, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. This year, 2024, is the year of the wood dragon, or according to P, his year. Out of the ten fortune cookies we’ve already eaten, only two have stood out: one predicting ‘A thrilling time is in store for you,’ which P received, and another one I got stating ‘You will be at your best on Friday.’ However, the real intrigue arose when I received the same (rather cryptic) message twice: ‘Disbelief destroys the magic.

What does it mean?

A week ago, I woke up to a severe allergic reaction to a seed oil I had previously used without incident just five days prior. It was one of the most unpleasant experiences I’ve had in a long time. Even after nearly a week, the aftermath persists, with the skin on my cheeks still red and blotchy from the ordeal. Now, I’m cautiously transitioning to a new skincare line I ordered earlier this month (told you about it here). I remain hopeful that this change will alleviate the issue, although I’m wary that the incident may have sensitised my immune system, rendering it more reactive to other substances. Lessons were learned.

This week’s links include a beautiful art nouveau bar in Paris, and a weekend in Antwerp; wardrobe staples, a bouclé jacket for the office, and much, much more.
