It’s a brand new year, and we’re excited to introduce a brand New Series: 5 Words to Learn this Month, where each month we find five beautiful words from any language, that you may or may not have heard before and present them with their sometimes poignant, sometimes insightful or even melancholic, sometimes even newly created (as in this first intalment), but always beautiful meanings. This month, the words are Venmödalen, Sonder, Liberosis, Nodus Tollens, Kenopsia and Opia. Click through to view …
James Blake gifted fans with a pre-Christmas present Sunday as the British singer released the studio take of his unadorned rendition of Don McLean’s “Vincent.”After frequently performing the American Pie song about Vincent Van Gogh in concert over the past year, Blake entered Los Angeles’ Conway Studios earlier this month to lay down the track.
A FEW WEEKS AGO we watched the rather insane film Ingrid Goes West (2017), a comedy about an unhinged social media stalker who moves who to LA and insinuates herself into the life of an Instagram star. If you’re Instagram-obsessed, then you’ll definitely find it entertaining, even if it is perhaps a little disturbing at times. We’re experiencing an unusual cold spell here this week (it’s a chilly 13°C at the moment), making us feel like hibernating, cosy indoors by candlelight and filled with anticipation for the holidays…
Showcasing star quality can take years for a new artist, but Los Angeles-based artist Billie Eilish is a natural. She’s only 15 years old, but she’s had an insane 2017 and songs/videos like “Bellyache” and “Ocean Eyes” have racked up tens of millions of plays. Billie’s been selling out shows around the world, winning over fans and media outlets alike, and she’s on her way to becoming a household name. Today she keeps things moving with a new release, the slow-burning “Bitches Broken Hearts.”
Grandbrothers‘ latest offering is very much in the vein of neo-classical compatriots and contemporaries Hauschka and Nils Frahm – dramatic piano flourishes and grand, sweeping sonic statements marry beneath minimalist-lite motifs. Where Grandbrothers take a leap to leftfield is further down in the mix, right at the bedrock: built on a foundation of thumping rhythms and clubby beats, this could easily find a home inside sweat-soaked warehouses as easily as the majestic symphony halls of continental Europe.

Perennial UK-rock instigator Liam Gallagher has released the second single from his upcoming debut solo album As You Were, a title which is also the way he signs most of his tweets. “Chinatown” is a number driven by acoustic guitars and a thumping bass drum, drenched in monolithic reverb.
ON FRIDAY NIGHT, by the golden glow of hazy street lamps, we followed the strains of jazz to a clearing in the park to discover couples swing dancing. It was unexpected and utterly perfect for a midsummer’s night, and really rather romantic. On Saturday night, again in the park, we happened upon a full jazz concert, white garden chairs set around an outdoor stage in front of the water fountain filled with late-night revelers, some with children in tow, late-arriving tourists on bicycles and circles of friends on blankets on the grass, sharing a bottle of rosé. Summertime here is the very essence of joie de vivre and we’re lucky to be a part of it. This week’s links include Living with Pink and London’s 30 Most Instagrammed Restaurants, a blue & white beach house and much, much more …
