Blogger Nathan Rollinson of The Rollinson has been blogging full-time since 2015. Originally from Cambridge, Nathan moved to London where he discovered his passion for the city. What began as a hobby of visiting beautiful hotels, restaurants and shops, snapping pictures of what he was eating and drinking for his Instagram page @therollinsonlondon, became a dream job, as he is often invited as guests of these beautiful places now.
EARLIER THIS WEEK we ran a short Colour Story on Dusky Pink and everyone went a little crazy for a certain impossibly romantic restaurant with pink tablecloths bathed in lamplight, overlooking the sea. Where is this place? they asked. Where on earth indeed. After a little searching, discovered this magical place to be a Michelin starred restaurant in Italy, located at the hotel Il San Pietro di Positano, Positano, Amalfi Coast, Italy to be exact.
A little late-summer colour inspiration in shades of satin and dusky pink: the loveliest shoulder-less bridesmaid dress, a cool drink on a summer’s day, and breakfast tables overlooking a mountainside…
WE FEATURED THE Grand Hotel Villa Feltrinelli in the summer of 2015, but the hotel has since redesigned their website and new photos have emerged. Situated on the picturesque Lake Garda in Italy, the neo-Gothic villa was built in 1892 as a summer home for the famous Italian publisher Feltrinelli family. Today, it is a luxury hotel with 20 suites. Read more about this romantic get-away here, and scroll through for a glimpse into its beautiful old-world rooms and corridors...
LONDON - It was the warm pink walls that drew us to this 1880s west London flat decorated by designer Virginia Howard. The designer was given free rein to change spaces around and do the architectural detailing, so the layout was completely transformed, most notably from three bedrooms to two and an enormous amount of storage added.
After growing up in Brooklyn, singer and producer Grace Ives bounced around East Coast colleges before landing at SUNY Purchase, where her Roland MC 505 groovebox distinguished her from the plethora of guitarists hoping to follow the path of alumna Mitski.
MONTREAL - We first came across the Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal) apartment of Lauren MacLean (@livingbylo) on the Apartment Therapy Instagram page and immediately fell in love with its impossible chicness. MacLean, who has "always been very passionate about interior design and beautiful spaces" works in the corporate world by day, using decorating as a creative outlet. "I believe your surroundings can really influence your state of mind so I try to create spaces that are not only visually attractive, but also carry a peaceful energy, paying attention to all the senses" she says. Her Montreal home, which has all the charm of a Paris apartment with its crown moulding and boiserie, a stone fireplace and herringbone floors, floor-to-ceiling windows and floods of light, also has a surprise back terrace filled with white trelliage and a myriad plants...
HAD FORGOTTEN to tell you about the shock of reading Grace’s announcement recently. It’s hard to believe that after nearly fifteen years, this year will be the last for Design*Sponge. Hers was the very first blog had ever read, way back in 2007, and it was the reason why I began TIG.
THIS WEEKEND was a working one in parts, and parts old films and drinks on terraces where it was warm in the sunshine and chilly in the shade—a lucky situation for February, when terraces are still hospitable even in the wintertime. We moved here for the weather, but ended up staying for people, the food, and the laid-back way of life. The endless sunny days, however, will always be our first love and now that February is already nearly half over, it will be springtime before we know it…
THIS WEEKEND we rented a scooter (our first time!) and drove to the beach, the wind in our hair on the quiet city streets. Today, it’s a holiday here, the shops are closed and the city is quiet, with many out of town for an extra long weekend. If you had believed in the idea of “Blue Monday”—that is, the idea that the third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the year, good news: the concept is actually pseudoscience, made up by a holiday company in 2005 to sell summer vacation packages. Don’t you feel better now? January is really not that bad, for it is a time of new beginnings…
SOMETIMES ON WEEKENDS (if there’s time) we like to watch random old films that we’ve never heard about, and this weekend, it we found a great one. It’s called Lost in America (1985) and is about a “husband and wife in their 30’s [who] decide to quit their jobs, live as free spirits and cruise America in a Winnebago.”
Beaverbrook Hotel is a late-nineteenth-century mansion set in the Surrey Hills, the quintessential British Country Estate. Decorator Susie Atkinson was tasked with designing something essentially British and romantic, "current but not trendy, comfortable and completely individual" (House & Garden). It is something she achieved brilliantly with tufted velvet and (Bowood) florals, dusky pink walls, cane chairs and Louise Bourgeois gallery walls...
