LAST WEEK I spoke about a need for change, to declutter and move away from maximalist tendencies and bright colours to a more subdued, neutral palette. Well, I may be changing my mind again, after seeing this bedside table (above) with its pile of books, bright pink table lamp and goldenrod-hued headboard in English Interior Designer Luke Edward Hall's Gloucestshire country home.
THERE IS A LINE from a Bruce Springsteen song that goes: “I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face“⏤and while I don’t want to change my face, I do like to change my clothes (often), and my hair (sometimes⏤in fact, just last week). A friend once asked me if I changed my décor tastes to match where I happen to be living at the time (she was visiting us in Spain), and I realise that yes, yes I guess I do.
If you are a longtime reader, you'll remember our series, Two Lovely Things, where we juxtapose seemingly unrelated things together. For this instalment, it's two different dining rooms, one with a marble table and crystal chandelier, and the other, with a dramatic dried floral display, candlelight and stripes⏤but both in cosy shades of dusky pink ...
WAS SPEAKING to P today about how these little musings are becoming more and more difficult with everything that has been going on in the world over the past while. After seeing all the horrific images that come out of Ukraine this weekend, feel like I've finally seen too much. That I know too much to still be optimistic. And yet, can't help but still believe in the beauty of this world, of this life⏤even if we have to look extra hard these days to find it ...
THIS WEEKEND was a classic homebody one with slow mornings and late evenings. P stopped by the local delicatessen for a fancy loaf of bread for brunch and contemplated making Fideuà ...
A CLOSE FRIEND recently remarked that she was low on energy, inspiration, everything. I brought it up to P who wondered, Do you think that maybe it's late-stage pandemic? He said that he was reading an article about how when we were in the height of lockdown, we accepted it and could mentally cope, but now that vaccines have been rolled out and it feels like we're nearing the end of lockdown life, we're remembering what life used to be like and it seems so very nearly within reach ...
WE FEATURED THE WORK of interior photographer and stylist Carley Page Summers twice before (here & here), but she has since added more images of her North Carolina home to her Instagram page and it's all marble and crystal chandeliers, gilded mirrors and dappled sunlight, a cat on a dining room table, and a dog curled up on a pink velvet armchair by the fire ...
In the midst of a new curfew time and talk of a new lockdown here in France, inspiration is more and more lointaine. Besides books and movies there is not much else to take the mind off the melancholy that comes with the season and this endless wintery month.
HAPPENED UPON THIS wonderfully elegant home in Lattingtown, New York by Ferguson & Shamamian Architects while searching for fitness studio décor for an upcoming project. I, of course, immediately fell for its decidedly elegant vibe of chintz and chandeliers and Venetian glass mirrors, balloon curtains and sweeping staircase, wall sconces and walk-in dressing rooms.
Over coffee before work this morning, P and I were discussing Kanye West’s most recent mad twitter rants, in which he also shared a few photos of his Hidden Hills home that he designed with Belgian collector, curator, designer and antiquarian Axel Vervoordt.
