THERE IS a Welsh word, hiraeth, that is used to describe a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past. I’ve been studying words in other languages recently, marvelling at how different languages have so many descriptive ways to denote very specific feelings or situations. This one sounds like a good word for this time of year, especially since looking forward and perhaps escaping hiraeth are two things that I’ve been giving a lot of thought to lately. On Sunday we walked along the Thames because the weather was sunny and the sky was blue and cloudless. We stopped on the way back to have drinks along the water and watch the sunset and the swans swim idly by. I took photos which you may have seen on Instagram. Also posted a makeup free selfie late Sunday night and then went to bed and woke the up the next morning to see that you really, really liked it. It’s still something that needs to be worked on, being able to move about in the world without the protective shield of a full face of makeup and bouncy shiny hot-roller hair, but it’s been good to try.

This week’s links include 21 European Cities that are even more charming in winter; and cashmere sweaters and velvet Mary Janes for autumn days; a recipe for pecan, milk chocolate & ricotta cake; and much, much more.
