Notes from the Weekend & a Few Lovely Links 24.05.21

THIS WEEKEND we watched the 2005 film The Squid and the Whale. Directed by Noah Baumbach and produced by Wes Anderson, it follows two brothers dealing with their parents’ divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980s. We both really liked it and ended discussing it for a quite awhile afterwards. We watched another Noah Baumbach film awhile ago, A Marriage Story, and I am beginning to realise that I really like his wistful, slow, snippet-in-the-life storytelling style.

Saturday was a trip to the city for a post-lockdown hair appointment for P, stopping for breakfast first in the most amazing old-style diner decorated with dark pink marble tables and pale pink and white striped wallpaper and hardened longstanding diner waitresses serving tables with gruff efficiency. The tea came in those little stainless steel pots served with the kind of white cup and saucer sets you get in hotel restaurants. It felt like being on a movie set. Afterward, we shopped a little, ate a deliciously decadent late lunch and stopped by the supermarket to pick up a bright spring bouquet filled with pink and white roses and tulips.

We’ve also been taking the week off from drinking (something we do from time to time as a reset), which means inadvertently filling the space left with snacks and treats that we don’t normally eat mid-week such as candy, crisps, salted caramel ice cream and even an entire Victoria Sponge cake. Of course, it’s a new week now and we’re back on track.

There has been a lot of other things going on as well, as you may have guessed, but will tell you all about it in a new Life Lately.

This week’s links include the best new restaurants from around the world and puff sleeve sweaters for summer days; five big ideas to make the world a happier place and much, much more.
