Notes from the Weekend & this Week’s Links 22.01.23

RECENTLY came across an article discussing Albert Einstein’s seven rules for living a better life. Rule #3 in particular—Have a puzzle mindset—really resonated. It goes something like this: Rather than viewing the problems we face in the world (either individually or collectively) as crises, which can cause us to feel despair, seeing them—whether financial, environmental, health-related, or political—as puzzles can help us to think about new approaches to solving them. A puzzle mindset empowers us to analyse issues from new angles and discover innovative ways to resolve them. I like this way of thinking, as seeing any of life’s inevitable problems as challenges to be solved, feels much more proactive and positive than seeing them as catastrophes to become overwhelmed by. This weekend was stormy with one of those named storms blowing everything away and bringing driving rains along with it. There is set to be a second named storm beginning tomorrow into Wednesday, apparently making this the most active storm season in the UK and Ireland since records began. Yes, I’m a wintrovert. (Which reminds, meant to tell you about a good trick for dry winter lips: treat them with glycolic acid, then apply a multi-purpose balm before bed.) On Saturday we went into town to check out the new bagel place in Primrose Hill. Of course, we might have known that Saturday would be their busiest day, so there was a bit of a queue and it was cold. The bagels were good, but not truly the New York style they were going for, despite the owner being an actual New Yorker. It didn’t beat Ess-a-bagel in NY, nor St-Viateur or Fairmount in Montréal. Next time we’re going to try the old place on Brick Lane, although maybe we’re all bageled out now? Also, if you haven’t had a chance to check out our brand new weekly newsletter, now would be a good time, as we’ll be spending quite a bit more time there this year…

This week’s links include 15 pretty places to visit in Wales that are still a secret; and cosy cropped sweaters and knitted wide-leg pants for cold winter days; a 2-week negativity fast; buying home décor on Etsy, and much, much more.
