BETELGEUSE, the red supergiant star in the shoulder of the constellation Orion, will disappear from the sky briefly tonight, at 8:17 p.m. EST in what scientists are calling a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. An asteroid called 319 Leona will pass in front of Betelgeuse and block its light for a few seconds as a shadow falls across Earth’s surface. Coincidentally, we were just listening, last night, to a sad wintry song by a Scottish band about this star. On Thursday and Friday of last week, we celebrated two anniversaries, so there was a breakfast out, as well as dinner, followed by sparkling rosé in a wine bar housed in the vaulted arches of a viaduc. We also put up the tree on Saturday, and I added lametta, hoping it would look elegant like the ones on Pinterest, but instead it looks not great. Still trying to figure out what went wrong and why it’s not coming out the way I’d planned, but to honest, it’s actually quite funny having a less than perfect tree this year.
