ON SATURDAY we walked to one of our favourite pubs along the Thames. It’s right on the water, with a row of tables on a dock set below the large outdoor terrace that backs onto the pub, and we were very lucky to get the very last available one. The weather was unseasonably warm, the leaves were just starting to turn, the air was crisp on the water and when P asked me if there were anywhere else in the world I’d rather be right at that moment, I was amazed to realise that there wasn’t. As to what I’m reading at the moment, it’s F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Beautiful and the Damned and the writing is magnificent. There are so many great words and phrases, such as “overwhelming dull” to describe a character’s memoirs, and “entirely satisfactory” to describe a favourite front room where everything happens. As for films, just finished rewatching Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and watching the final in the trilogy, Before Midnight, for the first time. It was terrible. There was a very long hotel room argument scene that was just uncomfortable. The other two films were much better. On our Substack this week, P wrote an article on Using Language to Reshape Our Minds and Realities. You can read it here.
This week’s links include Julia Child’s home in the South of France, and two Frank Lloyd Wright houses on the market; cotton twill trenches and leather loafers for October days, and much, much more.
