ONE OF our favourite things to do in London is stroll the down tree-lined streets of Mayfair, amongst the Georgian townhouses with their grand façades, all intricate architecture and delicate wrought iron detailing. This beautiful district is located in the heart of the city, a paragon of sophistication effortlessly combining history with modern luxury. Nestled next to leafy Hyde Park, Mayfair is characterised by its stately townhouses, five-star hotels, and Michelin-starred restaurants. This affluent neighbourhood is also home to the illustrious tailors of Savile Row and the haute couture emporiums of Bond Street. The Burlington Arcade runs between Bond Street and Burlington Gardens. Originally opened in 1819, the arcade is not only famous for its shops, but also its ornate architecture and glass skylights. The charming boutiques and historic pubs of Shepherd Market date back to the 18th century and include Ye Grapes, The Kings Arms, and The Market Tavern. The charming, village-like atmosphere and independent shops and eateries of this district make it a popular spot with both locals and tourists. Along Cork Street, a refined selection of contemporary art galleries adds a further layer of cultural richness to this historic neighbourhood.

The Coach & Horses

Tucked away on the çorner of Hay’s Mews and Hill Street, just steps from Berkeley Square, sits a classic London pub that’s been pouring pints for over 275 years. The Coach & Horses first opened its doors in 1744, making it the oldest drinking establishment still standing in Mayfair. Surrounded by high-end boutiques and luxury houses, this unpretentious pub is a low-key reminder of old-world London charm. Behind its weathered walls, locals and visitors alike can cosy up to the bar and savour a proper ale, enjoying the same warm, welcoming vibe that’s kept people coming back for generations. It’s a comfy retreat from the hustle and bustle outside, where the history is just as inviting as the expertly poured Guinness. For almost three centuries, The Coach & Horses has kept the neighbourhood spirit alive in style. Part refined heritage, part local hangout, it remains a London icon where visitors and regulars still drink side-by-side.

History

Mayfair’s history dates back to the 17th century when it was named after the May Fair, a popular annual event that took place on the site. Originally, it was a rural area on the outskirts of London, characterised by open fields and meadows. The transformation of Mayfair into a prestigious residential neighbourhood began in the 18th century. Wealthy aristocrats and nobility started building elegant Georgian townhouses, giving the area its distinct architectural style. Grosvenor Square, the heart of Mayfair, was developed during this period and became a focal point for high society. During the 19th century, Mayfair continued to evolve, attracting renowned artists, writers, and intellectuals, transforming into a hub for cultural and social gatherings. The neighbourhood also saw an increase in commercial activities, with upscale shops, exclusive clubs, and entertainment venues opening their doors. In the early 20th century, Mayfair retained its reputation as an affluent area, but also experienced changes: the rise of office spaces and commercial developments led to a mix of residential and business properties. Despite these changes, Mayfair’s exclusivity and charm endured, and it remained a sought-after address.

Today, Mayfair remains synonymous with luxury and sophistication. Its elegant Georgian townhouses have been meticulously maintained over the years, now home to high-end boutiques, galleries and restaurants. The neighbourhood’s timeless elegance has attracted global elites, making it one of the most prestigious addresses not only in London, but the world. Mayfair’s iconic architecture is a large part of its identity – the Georgian façades with ironwork details and sash windows provide a glimpse of the past amidst the ever-changing city. Throughout its history, Mayfair has been a centre of art, culture, and refinement: its galleries, theatres, and social clubs have hosted prominent figures from various fields, fostering a vibrant cultural scene. Today, Mayfair strikes a balance between preserving its historical identity and embracing contemporary luxury. The juxtaposition of centuries-old architecture with modern boutiques and amenities exemplifies the neighbourhood’s ability to adapt while honouring its past. Mayfair’s journey from a rural fairground to a pinnacle of elegance and sophistication is a testament to its enduring allure and adaptability. Its history weaves together the stories of aristocrats, artists, and entrepreneurs, creating a tapestry that continues to captivate residents and visitors alike.
