WHILE IN THE process of transitioning from an old bookmark organiser to a new one, I found saved links to The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach that had been meaning to tell you about. Called the most Instagrammable Hotel of 2020 by Vanity Fair, the hotel’s lobby features an entirely bespoke hand painted Chinoiserie wallcovering created by de Gournay in collaboration with Kemble Interiors. This latest addition to de Gournay’s collection, ‘The Colony’ is a large scale scenic motif designed exclusively for the lobby of the newly renovated Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida.
Working with the hotel’s owner, Sarah Wetenhall, the design was inspired by the original mid-century mural that adorned the hotel lobby when it first opened in 1947, discovered by Wetenhall through an old postcard image of the mural titled The Early Days in Palm Beach. “We worked hand in hand with de Gournay to create this unique ‘love letter’ to The Colony and its environs. It was our mission to embody the whimsy and humor of our beloved hotel, brought to life through the meticulous artistry of de Gournay.”
Hand-painted characters including parakeets and flamingos, alligators, cougars, the Colony’s own monkey mascot, ‘Johnny Brown,’ as well as winding foliage, showcase Florida’s diverse native plants, birdlife and animals, all on a beautiful background of a dusky pink in the shade of sugared rose.
