The vintage fashion editorial “Roman Holiday”, featuring Claudia Schiffer—one of the most iconic supermodels of the 1990s—first appeared in the December 1994 issue of Vogue US. Set in Rome, Italy, the shoot captured the city’s essence with its rich historical backdrop and vibrant street life.
FOR QUITE some time, we had intended to visit Primrose Hill, the charming neighbourhood in northwest London nestled between Camden Town and Regent’s Park. However, it was the opening of a new bagel shop on Regent’s Park Road that proved to be the incentive we needed to finally make the excursion.
THERE ARE literally over four thousand photos on my phone at the moment, many of which I'd meant to sort through and file away into digital memory boxes but forgot about when new photos took their place. I may be feeling crushed by their spatial weight as an unfinished task in my mind, so I've decided to share a few a them here in a series of Life Lately photo diaries...
IT HAS BEEN quite a while since we covered the Met Gala⏤its over-the-top theatrical displays are not often our thing. But, Anne Hathaway (above) looked stunning in Versace, enough to make us take a look at what others were wearing that night. This year’s dress code was “in honour of Karl.”
When they came up with machine-sliced bread, did we start referring to other bread as “annoying”? After the invention of the dishwasher, did we start calling our sinks “stupid”? Post-railroad, did we slander boats as “useless and embarrassing”?
In 2017, I was trying to write How to Be an Antiracist. Words came onto the page slower than ever. On some days, no words came at all. Clearly, I was in crisis. I don’t believe in writer’s block. When words aren’t flowing onto the page, I know why: I haven’t researched enough, organized the material enough, thought enough to exhume clarity, meticulously outlined my thoughts enough. I haven’t prepared myself to write.
WHILE IN THE process of transitioning from an old bookmark organiser to a new one, I found saved links to The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach that had been meaning to tell you about. Called the most Instagrammable Hotel of 2020 by Vanity Fair ...
I READ SOMETHING recently that stated that the sales of colour cosmetics dropped 33% in 2020, and that sales of cosmetics overall dropped by 15%. While I did buy a few new eyeshadow palettes during that time despite not having anywhere to go (perhaps it was for the odd Instagram selfie), I did actually reduce spending on these items ...
THE FIRST CHRISTIAN DIOR perfume ad that ever caught our attention was the 2008 Sofia Coppola-directed Miss Dior Cherie television commercial starring model Maryna Linchuk frolicking around Paris, bounding through boulevards, trying on sunglasses, and riding her bike to the strains of Brigitte Bardot’s “Moi, Je Joue”. Coppola has worked for a range of brands including Gap, Marc Jacobs and H&M, brands who were all looking to inject some of Coppola’s visually stunning, sensual style to their products. The director applied many of her signature filmmaking techniques to these commercials, including plenty of pastel colours, hip soundtracks and languid camera movements.
A CLOSE FRIEND recently remarked that she was low on energy, inspiration, everything. I brought it up to P who wondered, Do you think that maybe it's late-stage pandemic? He said that he was reading an article about how when we were in the height of lockdown, we accepted it and could mentally cope, but now that vaccines have been rolled out and it feels like we're nearing the end of lockdown life, we're remembering what life used to be like and it seems so very nearly within reach ...
THIS INSTALMENT OF 10 IMAGES features the charming pastel-hued Instagram photos of Yunjung Choi @cuisiniere. One of the best things about the social media app is its ability to provide a window into the lives of people over five thousand miles away, and Choi is just that, in Seoul, South Korea.
WE HAPPENED UPON a lilac-coloured faux leather halter top with matching trousers, and from that moment on, all we could think about were spring things and pretty, pretty pastels. And so, we've gathered up a few of our current favourites, from soft hotel bed linens to rose-coloured wine glasses and more ...
British Victoria's Secret model Stella Maxwell features in this beautifully filtered editorial shot by Greg Swales for the current issue of Issue Magazine. There are ruched dresses, fringed epaulets, lace and tulle, and a dreamlike haze that washes over everything in a lingering, leisurely, and romantic light...
Karl Lagerfeld's decision to transform the Grand Palais in to a formal French garden with climbing roses on trelliage, pergolas and water fountains was a welcome site on these January days. There were layers of ruffled tulle and embellished chiffon in pastel hues, feathery capped sleeves and crystal veils and of course, the traditional Chanel tweed, all ushering in a return to the age of innocence and a feeling of spring in the air ...
