I still love software as much today as I did when Paul Allen and I started Microsoft. But—even though it has improved a lot in the decades since then—in many ways, software is still pretty dumb.
In the summer of 2021, I experienced a cluster of coincidences, some of which had a distinctly supernatural feel. Here’s how it started. I keep a journal, and record dreams if they are especially vivid or strange. It doesn’t happen often, but I logged one in which my mother’s oldest friend, a woman called Rose, made an appearance to tell me that she (Rose) had just died.
For residents of southeast Paris, the construction vehicles rumbling back and forth behind the Austerlitz train station are a loud annoyance that has gone on for too many months. But for city officials—and countless Parisians, they hope—history is unfolding behind the cordoned-off area. After years of thwarted ambitions and vague promises, the French capital, officials say, is set to accomplish a rare feat for a major metropolis: making its once heavily polluted waterway fit for swimming again.

Although the official first day of autumn is not until September 22 and in the air there still clings the heavy humidity of summertime, all around, the pace of life has seemed to quicken.
SEPTEMBER IS THE FASHION INDUSTRY'S NEW YEAR. The start of autumn means reinventing your wardrobe to be the woman you've always wanted to be, whether it's finally succumbing to French girl style, or buying your first leather trousers for a femme fatale look. Fall campaigns — much like fashion editorials — are a reflection of their time, pointing to the zeitgeist of the moment as much as articles or features. The mood for this autumn? Well, it's a positive one, simply look at Missoni's colourful campaign, or the promising new look of DVF under Jonathan Saunders; and an imaginative one, cue Gucci's 60s sci-fi campaign complete with extra-terrestrial creatures and dinosaurs. So, whoever you want to be this fall, make it a stand-out.
