This week’s Playlist was inspired by Richard Linklater’s new film, BoyHood, which we caught on Friday night. The film chronicles Mason, a 6-year-old boy growing up in Texas, and was shot intermittently over twelve years with the same core cast (Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawk, Lorelei Linklater, Ellar Coltrane) throughout. BoyHood was an ambitious project that took a huge commitment from everyone involved; 39 days of filming were allocated over the twelve years. The result is something akin to cinematic magic as we watch Mason, played by Coltrane, grow from a small boy to a gangly teenager before our eyes. I liked this film a lot, although it did leave me with an uneasy feeling of how quickly time passes. Overall, Boyhood is life-affirming in that it reminds you that it’s the little moments that are important. Enjoy the soundtrack–hopefully you’ll get a chance to catch the film, if you haven’t already. –P P.S. previous playlists
