During a reading project I undertook to better understand the “third wave of democracy” — the remarkable and rapid rise of democracies in Latin America, Asia, Europe and Africa in the 1970s and 80s — I came to realize that this ascendency of democratic polities was not the result of some force propelling history toward its natural, final state, as some scholars have argued.
WE TRIED TO come up with a few different ideas this year for the men in your life⏤a silver retro-style rotary-inspired telephone, an all-aluminium suitcase, an eggplant serving platter, and a striped throw cushion. There are, of course, old favourites as well: a Fair Isle jumper, a cashmere scarf and glove set, a cedarwood candle and more.
A new range of candles have arrived at The Shop: made of 100% soy wax, these candles burn slowly and envelope the room in a warm, cosy scent. And better yet, they help those with disabilities find meaningful work. From raw materials to end product, this range was produced at a sheltered employment facility where people who need a little extra help receive services and training to develop work-related skills.
HAVE WORKED THROUGH two of the five Jean-Luc Godard films that are thought to be his best, prompted by the French-Swiss film director, screenwriter, and film critic's recent death last month. It's been an eventful few weeks since the last update, with autumn walks in the changing colours, saying hello to random cats in neighbours' gardens ...

Beautifully fragranced candles in that are hand-poured in small batches with a 100% natural soy and vegetable wax blend. If you are a longtime reader, you'll remember our series, Two Lovely Things, where we juxtapose seemingly unrelated things together. For this instalment, it's two different dining rooms, one with a marble table and crystal chandelier, and the other, with a dramatic dried floral display, candlelight and stripes⏤but both in cosy shades of dusky pink ...
The immense and forbidding Southern Ocean is famous for howling gales and devilish swells that have tested mariners for centuries. But its true strength lies beneath the waves. The ocean’s dominant feature, extending up to two miles deep and as much as 1,200 miles wide, is the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, by far the largest current in the world. It is the world’s climate engine, and it has kept the world from warming even more by drawing deep water from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, much of which has been submerged for hundreds of years, and pulling it to the surface. There, it exchanges heat and carbon dioxide with the atmosphere before being dispatched again on its eternal round trip.
IT IS THAT TIME of year again, the time for wreaths and fairy lights and holiday films and bits of gift wrap and ribbon and shortbread cookies everywhere. We saw an Instagram comment by someone yesterday stating that she might get drunk and put up the tree tonight (it was a Tuesday). Yes, regular hours and workdays fade away during this time of year, which is decidedly more free-flowing and therefore, festive ...
P AND I WERE talking this week about how I may be absorbing the weight of the unrelenting news cycles, the political turmoil, all the constant bad news. I am naturally empathic and find it difficult sometimes not to internalise all of the problems going on in the world.
Over the course of the past year, our social media streams began to change. The endless photos of trips to far-flung places like Japan and Australia, and influencer favourites like Bali and Santorini slowly gave way to quarantine home scenes. Quiet lockdown moments of living room cocktails and freshly baked loaves of Dutch oven bread, solitary sofa scenes of open laptops and Netflix streams ...
Porches’ Aaron Maine released a new album, Ricky Music, at the beginning of the year right as lockdown started. This summer, he’s remixed Girlpool and helped out his bud Dev Hynes to remix Tame Impala, and today he’s back with a new song of his own, “I Miss That.”
THIS INSTALMENT OF 10 IMAGES features the wonderfully moody and romantic Instagram photos of @nastyanastya: a sun-drenched morning in Tuscany, and a cup of tea at a sidewalk café in Paris; a day at the gallery, and a dinner of scallops by candlelight...
ATE LAST WEEK we were back in Edinburgh to pick up the last of our things from the storage unit we’ve had there since our move from the city over four and a half years ago. After carting off bamboo chairs (once painstakingly hand-painted in eggshell Farrow & Ball and reupholstered in Sanderson chintz) ...
Filipa de Abreu is a design consultant and brand ambassador for Tory Burch in New York. When she is not there, she spends her time in Lisbon, in this century-old four-bedroom rental with an ocean view in the city's Lapa neighbourhood ...
Today was one of those quintessentially gloomy English autumn days that remind you that winter is on its way. Being forever in love with summertime, it can be difficult with the cold and dark, and so, to look on the bright side, we're drawing inspiration from the palette of overcast days.
