I HAVE BEEN making these oatmeal breakfast cookies lately with maple syrup and dark chocolate chips. If you subscribe to our newsletter, you should have the recipe. Both P and I have been reading quite a bit about manifesting, as well as the concept of dopamine fasting—which may be a misnomer and also a misunderstanding of how the neurotransmitter dopamine actually works—but the underlying idea is still intriguing. It suggests taking a break from the repetitive patterns of excitement and overstimulation that digital technology can induce. The practice of consciously avoiding pleasurable activities for a period may help break bad habits, allow time for self-reflection, and ultimately enhance personal well-being. While there may be problems with the science, it couldn’t hurt to take a little time off now and then. I don’t think I’ll go so far as to get a dumbphone, but it did cross my mind a few times.
This week’s links include somatic exercise; Lisbon’s latest boutique hotel; striped canvas chairs and wicker market totes for the beach, and much, much more.
