LAST WEEK I read an article about a couple who had such trouble staying offline when they wanted to be, that they did the most drastic thing they could think of: they disconnected their internet. They had a landline installed to make calls, and used the Yellow Pages to look up telephone numbers. It sounded insane, but more so because the husband, who was also the author of the article, had developed such a dependency on his phone that such a step was necessary. P thinks that it only lasted as long as it took to write the article, and he could be right. Who could possibly live like that? In these quiet days leading up to Christmas, have definitely been online much less, sometimes not even knowing which room in the house I’ve left my phone, so I guess don’t need such drastic measures. Perhaps I’ve finally acheived that coveted work-life balance after all. Which reminds me, this will be my last Weekend Links edition for the year as, of course, next Monday is Christmas day. So I’ll leave you with a quote by Francis Bacon Sr. that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately: “Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand and melting like a snowflake.”
This week’s links include the 32 best places to spend Christmas around the world; and everything we all googled in 2023; belted wool coats and knee-high boots for December days, and much, much more.
