ON THURSDAY we took the long train journey north to Scotland. It’s normally a five-hour trip, but there was a delay, so it took a little over six and half hours before we finally arrived in Glasgow. It was marvellous to be there again⏤it felt like it’d been a long time. After a quick two-night stay to visit family, we were back on the train for the long ride home, with promises to see everyone again before Christmas. When we got back to London very late Saturday night, there were Day of the Dead painted faces, lots of Barbies, and even a French maid all in the metro, all coming and going to and from Halloween parties. It was pouring rain on the walk home from the station, a heavy rain that we’d never encountered here before. (Think they said something about a storm.) I didn’t have my fancy tartan Barbour umbrella because I accidentally left it on the train on the way up. When we were home and dried off (around midnight), we opened a bottle of organic wine and watched some films in a state of travel exhaustion and it was perfect. The clocks also went back on Saturday night, so we had a luxurious extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning. We ground coffee, steamed milk, lazed around before making an enormous cooked breakfast. There is something about the pace of Sundays that makes it seem there’s all the time in the world.
