TWO WEEKS AGO, when we were in Edinburgh meeting up with P’s brother, I got terrible blisters on my feet wearing the new espadrilles I’d ordered a few days earlier. I was really surprised (and a little confused) because I’ve had many pairs of espadrilles before and none of them ever gave me any trouble. I thought that maybe I should have broken them in more before the trip, but then I read recently about how many people have been having similar foot trouble getting back into regular shoes again after three years of wearing slippers, trainers, and other comfortable footwear during lockdown. It never occurred to me that wearing shoes with little support could lead to feet spreading out and becoming wider due to the loosening of ligaments. Interesting, right? The other thing I read about recently was the concept of “Cuddle Parties”⏤intimate get-togethers for people in search of platonic physical comfort by cuddling with a stranger. Know I have many things to be thankful for, but for some reason, I’d never thought about having a permanent cuddling partner as one of them. What else is there to tell you? Oh yes⏤Instagram has gotten even weirder recently, with everything being all Reels, all the time. Rather annoying, no? Or do you love it? Facebook’s ten-year run of nonstop revenue growth has finally come to end. There are many reasons for this, including Apple’s privacy change in app tracking on iPhones making Meta’s ads much less effective (costing them $10 billion in ad revenue last year alone); and the slowing economy causing advertisers to spend less. Now the company is using Reels to compete with TikTok and have also confirmed that your FB and Instagram feeds will become even worse, with the percentage of content that comes from accounts that you don’t follow set to be more than double next year. Something to think about.
This week’s links include St Martin’s, Isles of Scilly, a place that we’ve only heard about recently; and ten scenic and remote museums that are worth the trip; ruffled silk-satin midi dresses for summer days, jute sandals and much, much more.
