FRIDAY WE WERE glued to the coverage of the shocking Russian invasion of Ukraine. I saw women saying tearful good-byes to their soldier husbands and boyfriends, and Ukrainians forming long queues to donate blood and do their bit for their city. I saw a man at a train station saying good-bye to his wife and children, and when he got to his youngest (who couldn’t be more than two years old) break down in heavy wracking sobs, hugging her for what he feared might be the very last time. On Saturday morning, I awoke with apprehension, fearing Kyiv had fallen over night and was relieved to hear that it hadn’t. Yet? Today saw regular citizens volunteering to join the army and were handed guns⏤a graphic designer, a business manager, an actor, a psychologist, a language translator, an emotional school teacher, a sound designer, a makeup artist, Miss Ukraine. All of them had chosen to stay and fight. So much bravery and resolve. There have also been reports of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing into neighbouring countries and there are estimates that over four million may be displaced when all of this is over. One report today saw thousands of Ukrainian people entering Romania, but more importantly, many going the opposite direction, back to Ukraine⏤those who were living abroad now returning to answer the call to fight. The most popular Google search term in the country on Saturday night was “how to make a molotov cocktail”. By Sunday afternoon, the capital still remained in Ukrainian hands, the US, UK, Europe and Canada had blocked Swift access for some Russian banks, and things escalated dramatically, with Putin ordering the military to put its nuclear forces on the highest level of alert in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by NATO countries. It’s a lot to take in, especially while we’re still waiting for a pandemic to end. The world is in crazy, uncertain times.
