I stumbled across some photos of this beautiful castle in Umbria that is now a heritage hotel, and marvelled at how incredible the restoration of this 1000-year-old structure was and how the characteristics of the ancient castle and surrounding buildings were kept in intact while still offering modern comforts.
A little background history: “The recently restored estate has a long history, with structures dating back to the 14th century. It served as a fort, a farm, and a countryside retreat for Italy’s finest, until the late 20th century when it fell into disrepair. The estate was then bought in 1994 by Count Antonio Bolza and his family, who began a decade long restoration and renovation of the land and the structures, which include the main house, guest houses, a large tobacco barn, along with vineyards, orchards, and stables for their thoroughbred horses!” (Interior Monologue)
Hotel Castello di Reschio is now open to guests, offering a total of 36 designed suites and rooms, 30 of which are within the historic 10-century castle. This 10th-century building was restored by Count Antonio’s son, Benedikt Bolza (also Count Bolza) and his wife Donna Nencia.
“All of the rooms were decorated with terracotta-brick or wooden floors, hand-stitched linen curtains, Italian fabrics, and locally crafted marble and brass vanities… Benedikt has embraced an organic approach to the design, championing local craftsmanship and creating thoughtful, whimsical spaces that are filled with comfort and wit, while artfully nodding to the fascinating characters who once resided within the castle walls.” (dezeen)
The hotel has two main restaurants: Ristorante Alle Scuderie, offering simple, elegant food in a rustic, leafy setting; and Ristorante Al Castello, offering traditional Italian dishes and views across the beautiful Umbrian countryside. Guests can enjoy a drink at Bar Centrale, have afternoon tea at the courtyard Palm Court Bar or a snack at the poolside Il Torrino bar.
