IN THE PAST WEEK, we ate a little too much, drank a little too much, and watched a lot of holiday films. I did something that was very strange to my being, a thing very foreign to me, a thing normal people refer to as relaxing. For the first time in a very long time, I did not work for five days straight. It was wonderful, actually. Of course, when we came back to reality, I discovered that for some unknown reason, while it too was on holiday and off for five days, my iMac suddenly did not want to come back to work. After spending an hour with tech support, we were able to revive it, but of course, with all of its data wiped cleaned from the hard drive. My entire work life had vanished within seconds. Personalised settings, software, thousands of photos. I had not done a backup, ever.
When P and I first met, he had said to me, If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. I thought it cryptic and strange then, but I see now that he saw how chaotically I was running things, how I was a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of girl. While I’m happy that my desktop is running again, it was devastating to lose everything and have to begin again. Earlier this year, a similar such catastrophe occurred with our archives. (2020!) I have been learning a hard lesson about planning ahead, just in case, and about taking a little extra time with things. I’ve ordered a new external hard drive for regular backups from this point on, and after a forced fresh start, I’m also learning to let go of some things…
