Casas na Areia is holiday apartment in Comporta, Setubal, Portugal. Once a family home, it now serves as a home away from home for guests from around the world. Work on the Casas na Areia was completed by the architect Manuel Aires Mateus who created a unique design that connects nature with contemporary architecture, while adhering to the simplicity of the original fishermen’s houses typical to the area.
Casas na areia is made up of 4 houses, with the main house being a traditional thatched house containing the living area and a fully equipped kitchen to prepare meals, a long wooden table and oversized sofas to contemplate the view. The sand floor, which is heated in winter, revives the memory of the old fishermen’s houses, while the minimalism of the contemporary architecture highlights the space’s simplicity. The other three houses that make up the apartment contain extra bedrooms and bathrooms.
Casas na areia is located in Comporta, one hour south from Lisbon, in a region known for its white sandy beaches, good wines, fresh fish and rice paddies. Other activities in the area include horse riding on the beach and dolphin watching.
