Gustav Klimt

The busyness of Fashion Week has come to an end. Many of those who visited the city just to refill on fashion inspiration have left. But for those who are staying a little longer this October, we have some great plans for all of those who will be spending a few more days in the City of Lights.

The following exhibitions are the must see of the year and we hope you’ll get the chance to visit at least one of them.

L’Atèlier des Lumières is holding the most innovative exhibition: Gustav Klimt’s work in digital art.

The first digital exhibition in Paris uses 140 laser video projectors that project on to (and across) 10 metre high walls over the vast 3,300 square metre surface area of the renovated 19th-century building where the exhibition is being held. The sounds of Wagner, Chopin and Beethoven contribute to the multi-sensory experience.

“Walking around, you are enveloped by Klimt’s ravishing creations. Adele Bloch-Bauer, the subject of the artist’s most famous portrait, towers above you over 30 feet tall, disintegrating into a shower of gold and silver pixels without warning; before you know it, the lovers of Klimt’s masterpiece The Kiss (1907–08) are crowding out the vast space in a larger-than-life PDA. The confines of the room itself seem to shift as a blizzard of gold leaf whirls across the floor and ceiling.” (Artsy)

According to gallery director Michael Couzigou: “We see his beginnings in Vienna, where he is a young Art-deco painter, then slowly we arrive to the (Vienna’s modernist) Secession movement, when Klimt wants to emancipate himself from the artistic academism … Then, he wants to create his own movement and there we go further towards Symbolism, towards Art Nouveau and that is how we follow the progress of the work of Gustav Klimt.” (euronews)

This exhibition is open now until January 6, 2019

“Jean-Michel Basquiat – Egon Schiele”, an exceptional double exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton from October 3, 2018 to January 14, 2019

Schiele

This exhibition brings together some 100 works—drawings, gouaches, and paintings—over more than 600m2, in the pool-level galleries (Gallery 1). It is organised chronologically across four rooms, following the concept of line and its development in the artist’s work. Dieter Buchhart explains his choice in this way: “Very few artists have approached line and drawing with the same virtuosity and intensity as Schiele. […] By evolving from the ornamental line towards the expressionist line, combined, in three dimensions, fragmented and amputated, he enabled a borderline dissonant and divergent experience of the line as a sign of human existence.”

The exhibition covers the painter’s whole career, from 1980 to 1988, focusing on 120 defining works. With the Heads from 1981-1982, gathered for the first time here, and the presentation of several collaborations between Basquiat and Warhol, the exhibition includes works previously unseen in Europe, essential works such as Obnoxious Liberals (1982), In Italian (1983), and Riding with Death (1988), as well as paintings which have rarely been seen since their first presentations during the artist’s lifetime, such as Offensive Orange (1982), Untitled (Boxer) (1982), and Untitled (Yellow Tar and Feathers) (1982).

Miró

The Grand Palais in Paris is hosting an exhibition on Spanish painter Joan Miró, showcasing work that spans over 70 years of creation. “For me, a painting must give off sparks. It must dazzle like the beauty of a woman or a poem” said the painter.

Through painting, drawing, ceramics and sculpture, Miró invented a new world. This exhibition allows one to follow the artist throughout his life, one that was “marked by a creation of uninterrupted, constant renewal”, stated Jean-Louis Prat, art historian and curator of this retrospective. The exhibition is presented on two levels of the Grand Palais, 44 years after the first exhibition, which had attracted crowds in the same space. Miró always said that he dreamed not of the night, but that he dreamed of working. And he has allowed us to dream with him by inventing a world that is absolutely unique” says Prat, who was also a friend of the artist.
