Winston Surfshirt – Same Same

Sydney six-piece Winston Surfshirt are continuing their spree of catchy releases with “Same Same,” the third single from their forthcoming debut album Sponge Cake.

“Same Same” is armed with a swelling bassline, catchy chorus and vibrant jazz-infused interludes. The multi-layered track is perfectly complemented by Winston’s signature vocals and a fantastic brass section.

I haven’t had a chance to catch these guys live yet but with a run of upcoming shows that’s bound to change.

Tyler The Creator – See you Again ( feat. Kali Uchis)

Tyler, the Creator’s music has often been defined by exclusion. He was furious when rap blogs refused to post Odd Future songs. He has gleefully responded to being banned from countries. His songs attempted to reconcile with a divided fanbase. The subtext of Odd Future was that pearl-clutching moralists simply weren’t in on the (obscene) joke—the whole point of being radicals is to be “apart from.” He has also done his fair share of exclusion, too: marginalizing and upsetting women and queer people with violently misogynistic and homophobic lyrics. It has been asked how to reconcile the genius with the foul-mouthed punk.

Flower Boy (promoted as Scum Fuck Flower Boy) is Tyler’s course-correction, surprisingly meditative and beautifully colored, a collage of memories and daydreams that trades bratty subversion for reflection and self-improvement. He probes the things that shaped his psyche—loneliness, isolation, and disorientation—and focuses on outgrowing friendships, balancing the pull of nostalgia and the necessity for growth. Not only is Flower Boy Tyler’s most trenchant work, it’s his most inclusive: “Find Your Wings”: The Album, gentle and liberating. “Tell these black kids they can be who they are,” he raps on “Where This Flower Blooms,” as he grows into the artist he’s always longed to be, and perhaps always was.

  • KHÅEN – Kyrie

Up-and-coming producer Khåen is one to keep an ear out for. Little information about him exists out there, but it doesn’t need to: his music speaks for itself. Khåen just dropped his new single ‘Kyrie’ through Lane 8‘s label This Never Happened. The track is part of the label’s upcoming compilation, Root to Branch, Vol. 1. The compilation is set to drop on August 25 and also features another Khåen track, ‘Whims’, as well as new tracks by Anderholm and Limara.

‘Kyrie’ is a dazzling deep house single with lush synth strings, buzzy synth leads, layered drum loops, and an insistent bassline that expertly build off of and interact with one another. It makes for a chill, hypnotic listen with well-developed builds and breaks over the course of its four-minute runtime. The track has a gorgeous fade out in the last minute, with various elements gradually dropping out, leaving behind only contemplative synth strings for a wistful finale.

BICEP – VALE

Bicep are masters of finely crafting tension on the dancefloor with their loose-limbed house productions, as on the inescapable 2015 tune “Just.” On their self-titled debut album due out on September 1 via Ninja Tune, they apply that delicate approach to a whole new palette of sounds, grazing up against techno, electro, and Italo Disco — and even, on the airy latest single “Vale,” featuring a top line sung by an anonymous friend.

“‘Vale’ is one of the many little hybrid experiments of ours which came about whilst writing the album,” Bicep explained to The FADER in an email. “We drew influence from a broad range of sources like R&B, new age, jungle, and electro. Having historically used vocal samples, working with a few vocalists on the album brought new challenges to the recording process which added to the learning curve of the process as a whole.”

LDRU – To Be Free (SNBRN Remix)

Two of my favorite people got together and made some jams! LA producer SNBRN delivers a fantastic remix of our Aussie bestie LDRU’s fire track “To Be Free.” SNBRN takes his smooth G-House vibe and creates a dance floor grove that will definitely get your weekend started off right! He’s also just announced his After Dark Tour, and we’ll be hosting the date in San Francisco on November 04 at Mezzanine.
