GINGHAM is a plain-woven fabric made from dyed cotton or cotton-blend yarn. The name may have originated from the Malay adjective genggang, which means “ajar; separate”. Another theory for the name is that the fabric now known as gingham may have been made at Guingamp, a town in Brittany, France, and that the fabric may be named after the town.
When originally imported into Europe in the 17th century, gingham was a striped fabric, but today, it is known by its checkered pattern and is reminiscent of picnics in the countryside or the tablecloths at a favourite Italian restaurant. It has also always had a history for being rather chic, and Brigitte BARDOT even wore a pink gingham dress on her wedding day. The pattern is also enjoying a major resurgence and perfectly on-trend for the SPRING.
