Steve Cobby
Everywhere&Everywhen
After making us wait almost two decades for new solo material before last year’s “Saudade”, Steve Cobby is back in the blink of an eye with his second LP in as many years, once again on his own Declasse imprint. I suspect self-releasing suits Mr Cobby, and “Everliving” sees him embrace the creative freedom it allows. The fourteen immersive and expansive cuts are spread lovingly across three LPs rather than cramped onto a double, allowing each track the time and space to grow and evolve at its own pace. The result is an LP which entirely envelops you within its own sonic world, beguiling your senses with hypnotic keys, lilting rhythms, gentle guitars and pan global sounds. More electronic than its predecessor, “Everliving” delves deeper, gradually easing you into a trance like state through repetition and an expert understanding of space. So far the release has been met with universal praise from the likes of Dave Harvey, Phil Mison, Richard Norris and Peter Kruder, and really, who are we to disagree? Superb.

The Radio Dept. – Occupied
After impressing the world with their 2010 album Clinging To A Scheme, free-floating Swedish pop group the Radio Dept. went quiet for four years, only returning last year to release the new one-off track “Death To Fascism” in time for the Swedish elections. Now they’ve got a brand-new three-track EP called Occupied, and its title track is a beautifully rendered seven-minute bittersweet synthpop thumper. The group will reportedly have a new album out sometime this year, and “Occupy” is enough to convince me that it could be pretty great.

Thievery Corporation – Letter To The Editor
Genre-bending electronic duo, Thievery Corporation, are putting the final touches on a new album and we nabbed one of the singles! Check it below.
Rob Garza and Eric Hilton set up shop in Port Antonio, Jamaica to record The Temple of I & I (out 2/10/17, pre-order here) and they tracked up to 12 hours a day during their sessions. The duo gathered inspiration from their surroundings, locals and ‘overproofed rum’ (read: sounds like we’re in for a fun one).
As for live events, they’re gearing up for a run of shows on the east coast. Stay tuned for more dates to come in the new year.

M.I.A. – P.O.W.A
M.I.A. has released her new song “P.O.W.A.” The previously teasedtrack features this line: “I’m not Rihanna, I’m not Madonna, I’m not Mariah or Ariana/I’m been around in this world causing drama/The real spice girl, hot girl power.” Watch the self-directed video and find the lyrics below. The new track follows the announcement that she’s curating this year’s Meltdown. She recently shared an alternate version of “A.M.P.” Last year, she released AIM.
A day after the video’s release, M.I.A. posted this on Twitter:

Kiefer – U R What U Repeatedly Do
Kiefer Shackelford is a beatmaker based out of LA and is one of the most exciting up-and-comers I’ve come across recently.
Slated to drop his first album, Kickinit Alone, with Leaving Records soon (official date TBA), Kiefer utilizes his talent as a jazz pianist to add a unique flavor to his beats. His instagram also has a bunch of awesome clips that serve as evidence of why you should be on the lookout for Kickinit Alone.
One thing that I think is lacking from many live DJ sets is an entertaining performance. Either the DJ is just grooving to his music or spending his time hyping up the crowd a la Steve Aoki, which is fine, especially because people are dancing rather than watching the performance. Personally, I believe the rock or jazz concerts that I’ve been to have been more engaging, and that is simply due to the nature of the instruments they play; as an audience member you can clearly watch the performers create the sounds you hear. The prospect of Kiefer taking a solo on the keys during a live set really excites me. Best of luck to him going forward!
