Vogue Editor Alexandra Shulman Steps Down | Shulman arrived at Vogue as features editor in 1988, before joining GQ as editor in February 1990. She took the helm at Vogue in 1992 and since then has steered the magazine through a period of great change. “It was difficult to decide to leave but 25 years is a very long time and I am tremendously excited that I will now look forward into a different future,” Shulman added, “but I know that nothing will be quite like the years I have spent at Vogue. Nicholas Coleridge and Jonathan Newhouse have given me the space to edit this important magazine in exactly the way I wanted to and for that, and of course the opportunity in the first place, I am tremendously grateful. I will miss the people who surround me daily at Vogue House more than I can say and I am very pleased that I will be here for several months more concentrating on the next issues and new initiatives for this magazine that I love.” (Vogue)
In addition to her work with Vogue, Shulman has written columns for The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail, as well as published a novel. Of her decision to leave, the editor stated, “…last autumn I realised that I very much wanted to experience a different life and look forward to a future separate to Vogue”. Shulman held the position of editor-in-chief for 25 years, making her the longest serving editor in British Vogue history.

Franca Sozzani, Editor-in-Chief of Italian Vogue, Dies at 66 | Sozzani was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Italian Vogue in 1988, in the same month that Anna Wintour was made the Editor-in-Chief at American Vogue. (By 1994, she was made Editor in Chief of Italian Condé Nast, enjoying great support from Jonathan Newhouse, the chairman of Condé Nast International.) Franca immediately shook up the formulaic title with dynamic covers and content, creating a magazine that, in her words, would be “extravagant, experimental, innovative.” She is also credited with nurturing a dazzling talent roster of emerging photographers including Mario Testino, Paolo Roversi, Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Weber, and Steven Meisel, all of whom were attracted by the unprecedented editorial freedom that she gave them, and her passion for photography. Sozzani passed away after a year-long illness on 22 December 2016.
