THERE IS SOMETHING PLAYFUL YET MYSTERIOUS about Argentinian Sofía Sanchez de Betak. Whether it’s the eerie, alien-like beauty that you can’t trace to a particular nationality, or the unexpectedly joyful smile she frequently shows in street style shots, she has become a fixture at fashion week, and is likely to remain that way. The art director and founder of UnderOurSky, who splits her time between Paris and New York and is married to celebrated fashion producer Alexandre de Betak, was never interested in pulling looks together, leaving fashion choices to her sisters. It is her love for graphic design that eventually influenced her fashion choices; today she is always seeking out innovative and unexpected textures, hues, and silhouettes.
Argentina, with its traditional dress code imbued with colourful Gaucho influences, is undoubtedly her inspiration, for there are artful combinations of modern silhouettes with artisanal touches: a sleek leather jacket with her grandmother’s worn-out riding boots, or a warm shearling jacket layered over a fringed poncho. Intricacies are an essential element, whether those found in an embroidered coat, the edge of a semi-transparent silk skirt, or her dreamy Valentino wedding gown, and prints are never far away, with Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou amongst her favourite labels. Yet, an outfit can never be immaculate — it always needs a dishevelled or casual element, or “the cherry on top.”
“My style has EVOLVED in certain aspects, but in many ways it’s the exact same. I’m still the playful, ridiculous, print-obsessed FASHION victim as much as I am the sleek, downtown professional I occasionally need to be for work commitments. I love FRESH and challenging designers.”
