TEN PANDAS were born this year at the Ya’an Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding Center in China, making their first public appearance last week. The ten artificially-bred baby pandas range in age from two weeks to two months old. Giant panda births are a cause for celebration, as female pandas breed for only 2-3 days a year, giving birth to one cub every two years. The incredibly elusive animals are endangered, with only about 1,600 left in the wild. More than 300 pandas live in zoos and breeding centres around the world, mostly in China.
Pandas are born pink and blind, growing patches of fur within the first week. It will not be for another two months before they can open their eyes. New pandas are extremely difficult to care for, with 60 to 70 percent dying within the first week. The world is, of course, utterly enchanted and wishing these baby pandas well.
