Beauty : On Avant Garde Ad Campaigns & Aging Gracefully

 AFTER IT WAS ANNOUNCED EARLY LAST week that 80-year-old American author, Joan Didion, would be starring in French fashion house, Céline’s, latest ad campaign, it was all the internets could talk about. And whether this new shift toward embracing ‘women of a certain age’ began in 2010 with photographer Ari Seth Cohen’s blog, Advanced Style or something that has been gaining MOMENTUM due to the rise of the “silver economy,” — that is, the considerably higher wealth of 50-plus households in the United States and Britain versus “the shrinking spending power of the employment-challenged younger generation”; whatever the reason may be, this change has people talking, which is always a good thing.

  • Certainly, all ladies look amazing, of course adding beauty and class. I’m 67, without special Crees, surgeries and make overs and look fantastic too.

  • I love these ad campaigns! It just goes to show that beauty does not have to fade, and beauty does not have limits. Each of these women look phenomenal and I know that this is the start of a widely varied future of fashion advertising.

    I think this is lovely. For me, these women are inspirational – this is who I want to be at 60, 70, 80. Joyce Carpati (often featured in Advanced style) is one of my role models. Aging gracefully (mentally and physically) is easy as long as you keep being active, keep doing what you love, learn new things, and as long as nothing stops you from doing it (not even yourself). Life is about dynamism, innovation.
    I’m glad if this means the way society views older people is changing. I don’t want to be a sweet old lady who only sits around – I want to be independent, to do new things, to test my own limits.
