LAST WEEK there was a London heatwave and it was far too hot to even consider autumn clothes. Then, seemingly overnight, the heat dissipated and across the street, there are suddenly yellow fallen leaves strewn at the end of all the neighbour’s drives. The shops have long put away their summer racks, replacing them with scarves and hats and mittens and warm merino wool. Today was still in the low twenties, but next week we’re told, will only go up to 18 degrees (Celsius) so we’re now in an autumn state of mind… We’re dreaming of chunky knits and polished blazers and smart tweed jackets with brass buttons; eternally chic trench coats (of course!) and tall leather boots with cashmere jumpers.
