THIS WEEKEND we saw Anatomie d’une chute (Anatomy of a Fall), Justine Triet’s French courtroom drama that actually won the Palme d’Or in Cannes this year. It was though-provoking, gripping at times, and made us talk about it quite a bit, even long after it was over. (There was also wine.) The lead, Sandra Hüller, was excellent as the pragmatic, somewhat aloof wife accused of her husband’s murder. We’d seen her once before in the rather strange 2016 German comedy-drama Toni Erdmann. Anyway, back to the film: a lonely chalet dramatically surrounded by snow and ice in the French Alps. Heavy cable-knit and Fair Isle sweaters, and the intimacy of a family; uncomfortable arguments and surprising revelations in the courtroom⏤this film has it all. There were many ways to interpret things depending on how you look at the world, and it was a relief that both P and I seemed to be in agreement on everything, as it could have been one of those films that exposes vast differences between people. Next week, an old friend (who now lives in the Cayman Islands) is supposed to be in town, so we’re looking forward to meeting him somewhere in Mayfair. Hopefully the weather isn’t as stormy and blustery as it has been lately, especially since I just checked and it’s currently 31°C in the Caymans. It will be the second visit in a three months from old acquaintances. It seems that everyone makes it to London at some point.
(Also meant to tell you that there is a new instalment at the TIG Substack)
