WE HAVE AN unexpected bank holiday today due to the queen’s funeral, which marks the end of what has been a whirlwind of non-stop activities leading up to this point, all exhaustively covered by the media. Things reached peak Britishness on Wednesday of last week when Sky News set up a live cam so that we could watch people queue in real time. It all ended with a coffin lowered into a vault to the fading strains of a lone piper. It’s quiet here today in the countryside, as everything is shut, the normal sounds of car doors and tourists milling about in the town square eating pastries from the local shop absent. It’s also quiet because all the parcel deliveries that normally come to our house are absent. This weekend we put the electric blankets back on the beds and lit the fire for the first time since last winter. It was kind of cosy sitting curled up next to the flickering flames with a glass of natural wine.

This week’s links include the most memorable couture dresses of all time, and a look at the work of two artists who recently passed way; belted trench coats and tall leather boots for autumn days, and much, much more.
