THERE IS AN URGENCY to life here in the UK that we didn’t find in Spain, and it seems to be directly dependent on the weather. It’s an urgency that’s not only sensible, but necessary to help manage the disappointment that will inevitably come during the course of a British summer. This past Friday, we went into the city for the day and spent our time along the river, the sun hazy and golden, our bare toes in the grass while we lounged about with drinks at a place by the water. It was 30°C. Today, we’re back in wooly jumpers and it hasn’t stopped raining since the morning and last we checked, it was 11°C. In Spain, if you miss a sunny day, it’s not the end of the world, for there’ll be another one tomorrow. Here, the next sunny summery day is one that we all know about and have been planning for and we can’t wait to make the most of it, for if we miss it, another one may not come along for a very long time. It’s this sense of urgency that has permeated all other areas of our life as well, making us aware of every moment no matter how small that we’re living and feeling thankful for it. And that, perhaps, given the current state of the world, is a very good thing.
