At the time of writing, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris is on fire, its iconic spire, made of wood and lead and built during a restoration in the mid-19th century, confirmed collapsed. The 850-year-old medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, a magnificent example of French Gothic architecture, was ordered by Maurice de Sully, the Bishop of Paris, in 1160. The towering cathedral with its flying buttresses and gargoyles was inscribed by as an Unesco World Heritage site in 1991. Today, the entire wooden interior of the 12th-century landmark was burning and likely to be destroyed, with emergency services trying to salvage artwork and other priceless items that had been stored there. The fire was thought to be an accident due to the current renovation work taking place, but it is not known for certain. And it will not be known for some time what kind of damage has been caused, but at this moment, the bells of Notre-Dame have been silenced and everywhere around the world, there is heartbreak for the centuries-old symbol of Parisian culture and history.
