IT’S FUNNY HOW discovering something in common with someone one admires can suddenly cast everything in a new light. There are so many articles on the “proper” way to do things, from how much sleep we should be getting to what we should be eating, to thoughts on meditation, digital detoxes, and so on, that it can make one feel as if one were doing it all wrong. We try to get seven hours of sleep a night regardless of what time we go to bed, and it’s the absolute most we can fit in to our busy schedules and seems to work for us. However, with the profusion of articles out there lately on the subject, it’s easy to wonder if, perhaps, we might have it wrong? That’s why it was wonderful to discover that fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, (who we featured recently) follows the exact same schedule, telling Harper’s Bazaar in an interview a few years ago, “I sleep seven hours. If I go to bed at two, I wake up at nine. If I go to bed at midnight, I wake up at seven. I don’t wake up before—the house can fall apart, but I sleep for seven hours.” The realisation with this discovery is what we’ve thought all along — we all do things that work best for ourselves and that’s perfectly okay. For this reason, we try to avoid anything that claims to tell us otherwise, preferring to follow our own instincts and forge or own paths when it comes to matters of love and work, the ones that are exactly right for us.
