Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Facing out into the Atlantic Ocean, its red-tiled roofs sit atop ice cream coloured buildings and its cobbled streets ring with the sound of trams.
The sun-drenched images of Lisbon which follow, captured so beautifully by Australian photographer Katie Mitchell, showcase this pretty capital to perfection. It is known for both the visual feast of sorbet colours and the quintessentially Portuguese tiles which are used on public buildings and private homes alike. These tiles, known as Azulejos meaning ‘polished stone’, will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has visited the city. They come in a myriad of colours and patterns and can be found decorating both the interior and exterior of buildings.
Taking the images of Lisbon as my starting point this week, I have interwoven photographs of Lisbon with interior images which celebrate the colours and patterns of this ancient city. Inspiration for great design really can be found everywhere you look . . .
