YOU MAY OR MAY NOT have noticed, but fashion has gone through a small revolution. The coup d’etat was initiated by Alessandro Michele, who took the helm of Gucci one year ago, and gave the retro geek look an allure so great, that everyone from young fashion editors to elegant residents of the Upper East Side is suddenly inspired by the quirky librarian ensembles. There is an endless appeal in the colourful vintage-y pieces, from pleated dresses with fur and silk details, to frilly chiffon blouses and fur-lined loafers, for they are clothes women want to wear and look good in. With the fashion month ahead of us, it is very likely that any floral dresses, chevron-print pantsuits, metallic skirts, and appliqué sweaters worn by the fashion crowd, will be made by the iconic Italian house. It is rare that a single newcomer at a fashion house shakes up the industry to such an extent, and magical that Michele’s whimsical designs are embraced across fashion.
