Naomi Campbell by Ellen von Unwerth for Vogue March 1998

OLD-WORLD CHARM INTERMINGLES WITH EXOTIC ROMANTICISM in these stunning photographs for Vogue’s March 1998 issue — is there anything better than vintage editorials starring the impossibly striking Naomi Campbell? There were fluid dresses with a high slit and tail emulating fervent Flamenco dancers, dramatic red and black hues paired with crisp white, seemingly simple dresses embellished with lace or florals, and of course, accessories — from head flowers and hats to large earrings and bead necklaces. Whilst Spanish inspiration has been an unflagging element in fashion for years — anything from Oscar de la Renta‘s polka dots to Vogue Spain’s December 2012 homage to la cultura española — it is Grace Coddington‘s impeccable creative direction that made this one of my favourite fashion editorials. If you have any doubts, just look at the photograph of Naomi Campbell in a tulle Christian Lacroix skirt pushing a hot air balloon. —Victoria
