HEAVY FABRICS AND EMBELLISHMENTS characterised Giambattista Valli’s spring 2014 couture collection. His muse this year, according to Valli himself, was one with morning-after hair, who has thrown on haute couture to run around town. There were party dresses with miniskirts and layers of duchesse satin around the hips and bust, some with silver embellishments, others simply displaying the beautiful amaranth pink. Above that, it could be an embossed cropped top or equally embellished sleeveless silk with three dimensional floral appliqués . . .
. . . and the beautiful, beautiful gowns, were worthy of a princess. A thigh split gown with layers and layers of satin was perhaps the highlight, since it showed the essence of what Giambattista Valli was trying to portray: an impossibly feminine woman with a slight touch of defiance.
