TORY BURCH WAS not looking for a house on the Caribbean island of Antigua, but upon visiting the property that once belonged to Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, the designer fell in love. The house, however, was in a state of disrepair, surrounded by dead gardens, having hardly been lived in for 20 years.
Mellon, who decorated the space with Billy Badwin, would say it was the house she loved most, despite having had many to choose from. While spending time there, Mellon lived a quiet life, entertain only very few guests, Jacqueline Kennedy (after the death of her husband) among them, as well as Hubert de Givenchy, who had his own suite, china and linens.
To help her with her new island getaway, Burch called her longtime friend and collaborator (who has done many of her other homes), architect-decorator Daniel Romualdez. The finished space would have a relaxing island vibe, filled with canopy beds and wood chandeliers, topiaries, wicker, and antique French provincial furniture…
