All too quickly — and after one of the loveliest summers — fall has arrived, and although temperatures remain blissfully unchanged, the sun seems to shine differently, the golden haze appears to remain in the air for longer than usual in the early mornings and cashmere wraps are becoming an essential for evening dinners, leaving the atmosphere in the air as one of anticipation for autumn and some of the charming things it brings along . . .

. . . such as fall fashion, and layering, and experimenting with new trends, as well as reinventing old ones. Dior’s 1947 New Look has been overhauled by designers from Bottega Veneta to Nina Ricci, who gave way to the return of the waist, as well as exquisitely made pieces — fully tailored to the woman’s silhouette, creating a beautiful fashion flashback to the 50’s, where Marlene Dietrich enchanted the world dressed entirely in costumes designed by Christian Dior in Stage Fright.

Wear the cinched waist with Gucci’s open-shoulder burgundy homage to the new look, or embellish a black & white ensemble with a jewel-encrusted clutch, as shown below.

Coats with the hemlines lowered a few inches and skirts with yards and yards of fabric for flare, and waistlines enhanced with little black belts and careful draping like the Bottega Veneta coat or by elaborate tailoring as done in Valentino, all work to create the hourglass figure that has been endlessly coming and going ever since the invention of corsets and bustles, yet is here to stay for fall.
