At the end of the decade, the shadow left by Chromatics’ inimitable output feels hard to overstate. The trio’s widescreen, darkly-lit brand of Italo disco has lingered, influencing everyone from ScHoolboy Q to Cigarettes After Sex, who have been stripping their songs for parts and retrofitting their singular, decades-past dance-noir for big-budget rap and pop.
Rock bands used to be mysterious organizations. Fandom was an exercise in extreme patience. You whiled away the hours in monk-like private study of records, lyrics, and liner notes. A new song or video or interview hit like a scientist’s “eureka” moment, offering a new lens through which to explore familiar worlds more closely. But there were weeks and months where you heard nothing and pure enthusiasm and hope had to suffice.
Four years after the release of their last studio album, Goldfrapp are back — which is a great thing for those among us who can’t wait, can’t wait anymore.
The prolific electronic UK duo, who first burst onto the scene with their debut record Felt Mountain nearly two decades ago in 2000, return with a track called “Anymore,” the first offering from their upcoming seventh studio album, Silver Eye, out on March 31.
