IT IS BRIGHT AND CHILLY today, and we’re spending some time catching up on work at a café. We’re seated at the window with the winter sun shining through, sipping our cortados watching the world go by through the glass, elderly ladies in long camel coats and men in suits in a hurry. The emails have been piling up and there are too many things on our to-do lists to keep track of, but soon it will be the holidays and time off for a little while. Time for collecting ourselves and our thoughts and to reflect on the year gone by; time for midday glasses of cava and oysters at our favourite place at the mercado and for musing about the places we’ll travel to in the new year. There are new projects and plans for the year to come, but for now, we’re dreaming through these last lingering days of the year.
WE HAPPENED UPON Alyssa Kapito‘s work on Instagram (where else?) and were immediately and utterly smitten. There’s a Stephen Sills quality to her spaces, and even perhaps Joseph Dirand, with its on focus beautiful textures and clean lines.
Another holiday season has nearly come and gone and we’re looking to the future and the new year. More specifically, we’re looking to start anew and perhaps change things up a little at home, as we do every year.
IF THERE EVER were a place made of Instagram dreams, this is the place. While We Were Young Kitchen & Cocktails on West 10th Street, NYC's pink tufted velvet banquettes and marble tables and countertops, not to mention their menu of 'Healthy Contemporary American Cuisine' is like a siren song for tourists and locals alike. Mains include dishes such as Avocado Toast ($18), Wild Salmon ($28), Chicken & Waffles ($25), Main Lobster ($31), and adventurous cocktails such as The Morning After (Jasmine-Infused Bourbon, Aperol, Cinnamon, Lemon), and Too Good For You (Tequila, Kale, Lime, Agave, Cucumber) are on offer. IF WE WERE TO IMAGINE a home where all of our favourite things lived, an image of author Danielle Rollins’ 1970’s Georgian in Atlanta might materialise.
THERE IS A SPANISH BOOKSTORE that we love to visit that has all the best magazines. It was here, the other day, that had come across the latest issue of Elle Decoration España with the new home of couturier Jorge Vázquez on the cover. Of course, as an unabashed maximalist, it was love at first site. The Spanish fashion designer worked with his friend and decorator, Amaro Sánchez de Moya, who also designed Vázquez's store in La Coruña.
WHEN IT COMES TO décor, I would describe myself as a Romantic Traditionalist, perhaps even an Haute Bohemian, and a definite Maximalist. Anything modern or industrial rarely strikes my fancy, and that's why it's rather strange that I am so drawn to industrial inspired powder rooms lately. The look involves large exposed pipes and stands beneath sinks, (something I've never been fond of, as vanities provide so much more storage), and yet, when the exposed plumbing is made of golden brass, there is a sudden romance to it. The look only works, of course, when paired with the very traditional (and rather glamorous) elements of marble (preferably heavily veined) and more golden accents, such as mirrors and light fixtures, as well as brass faucets and taps. White is the preferred backdrop, in either paint or tile, although some have been known to use wallpaper or even more marble to great effect. Scroll through for a glimpse ...
A FEW WEEKS AGO we watched the rather insane film Ingrid Goes West (2017), a comedy about an unhinged social media stalker who moves who to LA and insinuates herself into the life of an Instagram star. If you’re Instagram-obsessed, then you’ll definitely find it entertaining, even if it is perhaps a little disturbing at times. We’re experiencing an unusual cold spell here this week (it’s a chilly 13°C at the moment), making us feel like hibernating, cosy indoors by candlelight and filled with anticipation for the holidays…
THIS WEEKEND we watched Frances Ha written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, who also directed the film (watch the trailer here). It was a charming and heartwarming look at the pursuit of happiness and following one’s dreams and moving through life with light and lightness.
