Five Conservative MPs have been confirmed as candidates to be the next Prime Minsiter: Theresa May, Michael Gove, Stephan Crabb, Liam Fox & Andrea Leadsom (Read more here) Boris Johnson, the favourite to replace David Cameron, surprised everyone by announcing that he would not put himself in the running. Meanwhile, in the Labour party, the British Labour party’s members of parliament voted no confidence in leader Jeremy Corbyn by a 172-40 margin. The vote came in the wake of the resignation of almost the entirety of Corbyn’s shadow cabinet. Though the vote is non-binding, and Corbyn has vowed to stay on, it could be the prelude to a historic split in the Labour party. Critics say he did not do enough to win the European Union referendum and would not be able to win a general election. He has however held on, noting that he was elected just in September on a significant mandate of Labour members.
