A BALCONET [or balconette] is an architectural term used to describe a false balcony, or railing on the outside of a window that reaches to the floor, and having—when the window is open—the appearance of a balcony. Balconets are often referred to as Juliet balconies after the scene from Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, in which Juliet utters the famous words, “O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?” from a balconet in the Capulets’ orchard.
