As you know, at The Shop, we have vastly expanded the range of items available, from leather goods to art, to wicker & rattan, fine jewellery and more. And so, to highlight all the new and talented designers we carry, we're bringing you this series to showcase the work of the talented créateurs we're currently collaborating with. This week, we're featuring Laurie Timpson and Philip Shaw of the progressive English knife-making brand, Savernake Knives.

Savernake create beautifully engineered, exceptional knives for chefs and cooks. Every one of their kitchen knives is individually made-to-order and hand-finished, using a combination of cutting-edge technology and artisanal skills. Each blade is hollow-ground, a unique profile that takes weight away from the blade and leaves an unparalleled cutting edge and follow-through feel. Savernake only use high-end Sandvik 14c28n stainless steel and the very best handle materials.

Working from an old calving barn on the edge of the Savernake Forest near Marlborough in Wiltshire, the company strives to combine the best of modern technology with age-old techniques in a quest to make the very best chef knife possible, with no concessions or compromise.

Savernake carry out every step of the making process (short of smelting the steel) themselves, and believe that it’s only through keeping things completely in-house that they can maintain quality and speed without compromising quality.

Thank you for helping us support the work of emerging artists and artisans from around the world, independent designers and modern craftspeople who still make beautiful things by hand.

LAURIE TIMPSON

Before launching Savernake Knives, Laurie Timpson spent five years as an officer in the Scots Guards, three of them spent in Ulster at the tail end of the Troubles. The next decade or so saw him variously setting up emergency relief programmes in southern Sudan and Ethiopia, clearing landmines for the HALO Trust in Mozambique, Afghanistan and Cambodia, studying at the University of Cape Town, looking for gold in Liberia and running a power station in Nairobi along with other little exploits over much of sub-Saharan Africa. Timspon moved back to England in 2014 and began Savernake Knives as a distraction from developing a system for the meaningful display of quantitative information, a decidedly unusual career trajectory after such a peripatetic existence. He now lives off the grid in the middle of the Savernake forest with his wife and baby boy.

PHILIP SHAW

Philip Shaw's career began in London, with the launching and management of two successful pubs, but it was his family roots in Kenya that led him to embark on an adventurous journey running safaris, learning to track wild animals with the Maasai and marketing several businesses in both Kenya and Uganda. In 2011, Shaw joined the consultancy firm Adam Smith International to head up their operations in South Sudan before moving to Pakistan where he was responsible for setting up and managing operations in Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar. After a career that took him all over the globe, Shaw went back to England in 2016 to join Timpson at Savernake Knives. He now lives in Wiltshire with his wife Georgie and their baby girl.
