Weekday Wanderlust: 5 Beautiful Riads in Marrakech

Still having some lingering thoughts on holidays and always planning virtual inspiration boards of places I want to go. This week’s travel inspiration comes from the beautiful Marrakech. While you might already know about the activities to be explored such as camel trekking, seeing the desert, visiting medinas and so on, a completely authentic Moroccan experience, I think, depends on where you choose to stay.

Marrakech has over 900 riads (traditional Moroccan houses or palaces with interior gardens or courtyards) on the streets of the ancient Medina, so there is no shortage of choices for your visit to this beautiful city. Here are my top 5 (Instagram-inspired) places to stay.

Riad de Tarabel

8, Derb Sraghna, Quartier Dar El Bacha
Marrakech Médina, Morocco

Tarabel's owners, Rose and Leonard, blended an elegant mix of French and Arabic styles for the interiors, with furnishings sourced from all over the world including pieces from Leonard's parents' own château back in France.

“Really we built it as a house for us in the beginning but then we had a lot of people wanting to stay, so we decided to turn it into a hotel. We now have 10 rooms but we won’t make it bigger because the soul of the house would change and the atmosphere would change. We wanted to create a very peaceful atmosphere. With it being only 10 rooms, you don’t realise there are other people in the riad – it’s like having your own home in Marrakech. The décor is a real mixture – with the Moroccan architecture but then art and furniture from all over the world.“

Cyrielle and Julien, a creative duo from Paris gave a second life to the Riad Jardin Secret:

“We pushed two grand cedar doors that led us to the sumptuous and intimate palace we now call home. Here, organic elements and ornamentations come together in the most authentic expression of Moroccan architecture. Magic unravels. Time stops.”

Close to the Place Jemaa El Fna and to the Place des Epices, the Riad Bab 54 has a great central location. The hotel is made up of five rooms -- three double ones, a triple and a quadruple room -- a small pool, a common living room and a terrace where breakfast is served. The owners, Charles and Véronique, designed and decorated the place with refined Moroccan furniture, making the place a lovely and authentic place to stay.

The Riad Dar-K is well situated, close to the Marrakech Museum and the Medersa Ben Youssef (16th-century Koranic school). This four-room oasis blends traditional architecture and modernity. The Belgian-French couple behind it is fully at your disposal and delighted to provide recommendations for the best places to visit, reserve you a hammam or a table in a good restaurant.
